Position: Associate Editor for GIJN in Russian
Global Investigative Journalism Network

This is a part-time position with the nonprofit Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN). Applicants must have a solid understanding of investigative and data journalism, as well as experience and strong skills in managing social media.

GIJN is an association of 250 member organizations in 91 countries dedicated to spreading and advancing investigative journalism around the world. This position aims to disseminate and increase access to GIJN’s reporting resources in the Russian language, as well as strengthen and build networks and organizations of investigative journalists within Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia. This position reports to GIJN’s Regional Editor.

GIJN is a distributed nonprofit organization, and this is a remote position. GIJN is staffed by an extraordinary multicultural team based in over 20 countries. You’ll work in a collaborative network that is having an impact every day on the front lines of journalism.

Work duties:

  • Plan, research, aggregate, and post daily in Russian-language the best available content on tools, methods, data sets, opportunities, and innovative practices in investigative and data journalism for GIJN in Russian social media platforms (Instagram, X, Facebook, Telegram, YouTube);
  • Keep track of investigative and data journalism projects and the work of media organizations in Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia;
  • Create graphics and short videos (reels, stories) for social networks using Canva, or other tools, and repackaging them for various social media platforms;
  • Create and execute creative engagement strategies and campaigns to disseminate GIJN’s resources, improve and strengthen the community of journalists, and grow new audiences;
  • Facilitate and moderate discussions among followers on social media;
  • Help in producing and translating Russian-language stories for GIJN’s website;
  • Edit, manage, layout, and review content and translations in Russian;
  • Produce a monthly newsletter;
  • Provide social media items tied to investigative journalism from Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia to GIJN’s other editors;
  • Answer requests for information or assistance;
  • Monitor social media traffic, and develop strategies for maintaining and expanding GIJN’s network across Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia;
  • Assist with various GIJN tasks such as conference preparation and training workshops.

Requirements:

  • Applicants should have at least three years of demonstrated work experience in an online environment, either in full time employment or freelance, for a newsroom or journalism-related organization;
  • Understanding of investigative and data journalism;
  • Excellent Russian-language writing and editing skills;
  • Fluent command of English, in speaking and writing;
  • Digital storytelling skills;
  • Strong organizational and fact-checking skills;
  • A detail-oriented personality;
  • The ability to work remotely and comfortably in a global, virtual, highly diverse cross-cultural team;
  • Self-motivated with good communication skills;
  • Ability to multitask and meet multiple deadlines;
  • Work experience in social media, ideally including Instagram, X, YouTube, Telegram, and Facebook;
  • Knowledge of the journalism development in post-Soviet states;
  • Knowledge of WordPress, Mailchimp, Excel, and Canva is a plus;


Location: Open to candidates who speak and write in Russian. GIJN is a virtual nonprofit organization. You’ll need good, dependable broadband.

Fee: We’re a nonprofit but we pay a living wage. Salary will depend on your location and experience.
